Acclaimed host and character artist Anasuya Bharadwaj turned antagonist in Darja starring Sunil in another pivotal role. The film was released today. Let's see how it is.
Kanaka Maha Laxmi (Anasuya Bharadwaj) is a notorious criminal who runs the liquor business (Gudumba) in Bandar. He continues to kill everyone in his path. On the other hand, we meet Ganesh and Ranga (Arun Varma, Shammu), two brothers who will enjoy their love life with Pushpa and Geetha (Sireesha Nulu, Aqsa Khan). Things change dramatically when Ganesh dies. Siva Shankar Paiditpati (Sunil) is responsible as the new ACP to control the situation. Who killed Ganesh? Are Geetha and Pushpa involved in the crime? What is the connection between Ganesh family and Kanaka Maha Laxmi? What is the role of Siva Shankar Paidipati? The answers can be found only on the big screen.
Sunil
Sunil is undoubtedly the biggest asset of the film. Although he enters a bit late, he packs a punch with his performance as a brutal cop and does a great job in the fight sequences. He carries the whole last part on his shoulders.
Anasuya Bharadwaj is perfect as the notorious criminal. His body language and demeanor suit the role very well. He gave a very good performance as the antagonist and his screen presence just lit up. Interval bang deserves. The second part had some good moments with interesting twists and turns.
The writing is one of the major flaws of the film. The screenplay is very dull and confusing for the first hour with too many subplots. The director has placed the main story in the second half, but the damage is already done with the bad first half.
The love trail of two brothers is boring and not attractive at all. There are many songs in the film which do not fit the narrative. Emotional scenes are not believable, there is no innovation.
There are many unwanted scenes in the film that test the patience. The film drags for no reason and the editor could have cut 10-15 minutes. In most scenes, we can feel the shades of other films.
Comedy in movies seems so forced and doesn't generate any laughs. There are several other artistes in the film, but none make a mark.
Music director Rap Rock Shakeel has done a good job with his music and background music. He could have done better, though. The cinematography is good as it captures the coastal locations beautifully.
As for director Saleem Malik, he failed miserably in his story with many irregular and unwanted sequences making the film very boring. Especially in the first half, the screenplay goes for a cheat with unrelated scenes. Its treatment is also outdated.
Overall Review
Overall, Darja is an ineffectual old age revenge drama. The movie has a bad first half and then a slightly better second half. Very good performances by Sunil and Anasuya could not save the film. Writer Minister and director Salim Malik should be blamed for conducting the proceedings in a boring and indifferent manner. You can expect another good movie to watch this weekend.
