Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor has teamed up with Karan Malhotra of Agneepath fame for the period drama Shamshera. The film has created good buzz and has released today. Let's find out if the movie lives up to the expectations.
Storyline
In the battle between the Mughals and the Rajputs, the Khamerans are affected. Eventually, they become slaves and continue to be mistreated by the British regime. Left with no choice, they become robbers who snatch wealth from the upper caste. To manage this situation, the British use the help of police officer Shuddh Singh (Sanjay Dutt) to negotiate a compromise with the Khamerans.
Shamshera (Ranbir Kapoor), who leads the Khamerans, accepts this. The British took advantage of their situation to catch the Khamerans and deceive them. Shamshera sacrifices her life to save her people. Shamshera's son Malla (Young Ranbir) takes up his father's business. What happened to Khamerans? Did Malla fulfill his father's wish? This forms the rest of the story.
Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir Kapoor is awesome as both Shamshera and Malla. Her screen presence, energetic performance and body language are a joy to watch on the big screen. The entire film rests on his shoulders. There is almost no scene without him.
Several action sequences in the film deserve special mention. The train episode that precedes the climax gives the dark bumps. VFX is very good. Vaani Kapoor looked adorable and does her role well.
Although there are many weak points, the important one to begin with is the storyline. The plot of the film is very routine with a deadly formula. It makes us predict every scene of the movie. There is no scene that looks like a novel.
Neither half is engaging and the film is full of very boring elements. Even the emotional side is not handled well. The movie reminds us of many movies. To be clear, it is a mixture of four or five period dramas.
Sanjay Datt
Sanjay Dutt's character is very badly written. His acting and dialogue delivery are essentially irritating. The movie is very long and doesn't end with testing the patience levels. Being a regular fare, the fate could have changed a bit if the film had been crisp. Unfortunately, that was not the case here. The dubbing isn't that good either. Other artists are wasted in their roles.
Technically the movie is awesome. Yash Raj Films is known for its product quality and it shows the same on screen. The film is set on a rich scale. The art director did a great job.
The music is decent. But the background score is weak. It doesn't elevate the action scenes. Cinematography is good. While the VFX work in the film is commendable, it doesn't help that the film lacks the core spirit. The climax is another letdown that drags on too much.
As far as director Karan Malhotra is concerned, he has opted for an ordinary script and his story is clueless. He included many boring elements which made the movie unbearable. He failed miserably in directing a star like Ranbir and it's a missed opportunity.
Overall, Shamshera is an unbearable and tiresome period drama. Ranbir has a great performance in dual roles, but it couldn't save the sinking ship. Director Karan Malhotra delivers a mundane drama without any thrilling elements. You can skip this movie.
