Alice in Borderland Season 2
Episode No 5 Recap
Through flashbacks, we see how this girl, Akane, has come to this day. The first game he played was his last. He was forced into a game called Boiling Point where an arena he was still inside completely collapsed and exploded. He was hit by one of the explosions and impaled in the leg with a spike. When he woke up, all his fellow contestants were dead in the rubble.
Akane managed to free herself and crawled away through the vents. However, his wound became completely infected and, thanks to the expert opinion of a nearby drunken doctor, he had no choice but to amputate his own leg. Akane resisted until the end, which explains her drive to survive and why she risks everything to continue the fight.
Back in the present, the trio sets off together, with Arisu handing over a gun to protect himself. Aguni points out that they should keep their thoughts to themselves, especially since the King of Spades may be following them now. They need to find a good place to ambush him. They find a cliff nearby and decide to lure the King of Spades into it. With road wires and smoke bombs in hand, the three of them put them in place together and wait for the boss to arrive.
Wearing night vision goggles, he learns Arisu's position and can even bypass travel wires. Before he can fire, the torch lights up and both Akane and Aguni jump to his place. The boss isn't down for long, and it looks like Arisu was actually being used as bait this whole time. The King of Spades throws a grenade at Arisu's feet. As soon as it explodes, it moves out of the way. The explosion sends him sprawling into the river below.
When Aguni and Akane arrive, the former is shot and passed out. Akane survives. Thankfully, the boss turns around and leaves, his plan a complete moron. Arisu gets separated from the others and wanders the streets alone until he finds a tent. Unfortunately, it's not Usagi as she finds a few survivors, including a young boy named Kota and a girl. The former seems to have lost her parents, something Usagi can clearly empathize with.
Arisu returns to the center of the city, where another blimp goes up in flames and a bunch of survivors exit the parking lot. Thankfully, Aguni is still alive and is being fixed by Akane.
Arisu continues and ends up in an overgrown part of the city completely overrun by nature. The vines suffocate the skyscrapers, but still press on them. As for Kuine, she manages to compete in more games and wins, taking up her precious time with Visa. Unfortunately, due to his problems, he has numerous cuts all over his body.
Ann fulfills her promise from the video recorded by Kaito. He manages to get to the edge of town, but the mountain ranges seem to stretch on forever. Although he doesn't know what to do, Usagi and Kota aren't.
Usagi and Kota go to the next game, this time at a construction site for the Queen of Spades. Thankfully, Arisu manages to catch up to them there and the pair are reunited. According to Arisu, there were only two physical games left to play, and he knew he would be in one of them. The pair embrace tenderly, but are quickly interrupted by the Queen of Spades appearing on the big screen.
The Queen's team consists of four members and one is chosen as the King. It is the same for the Challengers, Kota was named the King for the Challengers. Each team alternately takes turns for a total of 16 rounds. The Queen's Team players chase the Challengers to start. If the button behind them turns red, they face the Queen's team and may not move for the rest of the round.
In the next round, that player will be considered part of the Queen's team. The Kings can't be turned around and the opposite is true for the Challengers team.
To formalize all this, each member is forced to wear a vest. And of course, the Queen's Team immediately starts filling the stairs as soon as the buzzer starts. Kota is forced to stay alone in the middle of the roof as the turns alternate. The Queen's Team works to make sure they have the upper hand by preventing any sign of Challenger's turn. Of course, since the Queen can't transform, she has a distinct advantage given that she's at the helm of it all. Kota is alone on the roof. Naturally, the Queen ends up with a distinct advantage, ending up with a 17-3 lead against Usagi, Arisu, and Kota.
The Queen is sure she wants Arisu on her side, and our characters soon clear that up. However, the episode comes to a painful end before we can find an answer.
Episode Review
Alice in the Borderland returns with another good episode, one that sees all of our characters temporarily separated, allowing for deeper world-building and interesting locations to enter the show. Seeing snippets of Ann, Aguni, and Chishiya helps give each of them more context as to what's going on, and I'm sure we'll see Arisu and Usagi team up with Chishiya… if they make it that far, of course.
This maniacal manhunt is about to take a turn for the worst, and with some of the longest episodes of the entire series, it's anyone's guess what will happen next and who will come out on top. Bring him!
