Alice in Borderland Season 2

Episode 4 Recap

Alice in Borderland season 2 episode 4 begins with us in prison. Chishiya is alone, but he manages to convince Matsushita (the emo kid) that Sunato Banda (the guy he's been playing the whole game with) is a serial killer and it's all over the papers. Chishiya is convinced that it is Jack and warns that he will soon become aggressive.

There's Yaba, and there's that brave girl (Kotoko). Kotoko goes to the kitchen to get some food, where Chishiya tries to talk to her, but it doesn't go to plan. Time is running out and Chishiya is alone and doesn't know where else to turn. The girl lies about the Yabaya symbol, and Matsushita also lies to Banda. With just 90 seconds left, Chishiya is left with a 50/50 shot as he could be the symbol.

The round ends and both Matsushita and Chishiya show their cells, the former laughing maniacally. Suddenly Banda also appears! Yaba appears immediately after surviving this round. Realizing that Kotoko has been killed, they realize that she and Mitsushita have been working together all this time and that he betrayed her. The latter is actually the Jack of Hearts. They communicated through the snacks they picked up, Chishiya realized that the color of the packaging was related to their symbols and helped them through the game up to that point.

The reason Jack of Hearts is still alive is simply because they can get some answers from this man by figuring out what happened. Razor-wielding Banda and Yaba get in their way, resulting in the Jack of Hearts balloon bursting. Chishiya manages to escape without dying.

Meanwhile, Arisu and the others try to prepare the next phase of the attack. With the Jack of Hearts and the King of Clubs gone, Quinn leaves and decides to look for Ann and Chishia. They will need all the help they can get to take down the King of Spades.

Arisu and Usagi are left alone and go hunting together; some much needed downtime after the events that have taken place. The couple tries to catch a rabbit, but to no avail. However, this only paves the way for a darker drama. As they exit the clearing, they find many dead men and women on the floor. One of the survivors leans against the RV and the pair tentatively approach. "Film..." He says before trailing off.

There's a movie projector inside the RV, so the pair play the video and watch as Kaito—the outsider—finishes filming and documenting everything that happens in town. Kaito takes a picture of Ann in the water, where he notes that the plants are getting wilder and wilder outside the city.

As for Kaito, he follows a news story and comes to a community outside the city. One of the men celebrates the fireworks in the sky on the first day. A lady in the congregation remembers everything from the day she arrived. He notes that when the fireworks went off, they flashed and looked real. Actually, they weren't fireworks, but ... BANG! Just like that, things take a turn for the worse as the King of Spades shows up and slaughters them all.

Presently, there is a rumble as the King of Spades reaches Arisu and Usgi, his projectile flying overhead. Arisu and Usagi are separated in the ensuing chaos, resulting in Arisu confronting the boss. That is, until more gunfire rained down from the other side, hitting Patron. Unfortunately, as Arisu sprints away, he walks directly into the path of an unknown figure who knocks him out.

When Arisu wakes up, he sees a woman with one leg in the camp and the other in the shadows bringing him to his camp. But who is he? Arisu goes through the clearing and finds Agu!

 Episode Review

Not only do we get to see the end of a great prison game, but we also get teases of exposition around the beginning of what this city-wide game is about and what it means. There's a lot to think about here, and it's still not clear what it's all about and who orchestrated it.

Alice in Wonderland doesn't mess around this year, and while the games are brilliantly staged, it's the happenings that are far from what feels equally endearing at the moment. The added breadth of the world, not to mention deeper characterization, makes this year's effort an absolute joy to watch. The ending with Aguni is certainly a surprise too and it will be interesting to see what happens next.
