The story is set in his native village of Kollapur, where two rival gangs fight and one of them, Shekar Babu, is killed. Kalki (Rajasekhar) is appointed to investigate this case. He begins to dig deep into the case, but to his surprise, there is more to the murder mystery. What it is and how Kalki unravels it all is the entire story of the film.
Production Values
The production values of the film are quite good as the film looks quite rich in every frame. Rajasekhar does a sincere job as a cop. Credit must go to Prasanth varma for showcasing it superbly.
Adah Sharma is tame in her role but Nanditha Swetha got a meaty role and she was quite impressive in the second half. The last fifteen minutes of the film are quite engaging and the way the twists are revealed during this time is very good.
Rahul Ramakrishna was good as the journalist supporting Rajasekhar, but he needs to get rid of his weird haircut and beard. Although Poojita appeared in a few scenes in Ponna, she was impressive.
Siddhu gets a good and decisive role in Jonnalagad and he has performed well. Ashutosh Rana looked impressive as the main villain.
One of the biggest flaws of the film is its pacing and length. It's close to 2 hours and 20 minutes, which feels like three hours due to the lackluster narration in the first part.
Rajasekhar and his comeback with Adah Sharma looks dated and was only used for the promotion of the film. This could have easily been edited out and made things better for the audience.
To confuse the audience, the director throws in many characters with good intentions. But unfortunately, they don't unfold properly in the narrative, which distracts the film with many interruptions.
As said earlier, the production values of the film are Impressive. The BGM is pretty good, but it's overused for scenes that don't need any emphasis. The camera work is impressive and so was the production design. But there were too many slow motion shots. The film has a special color template and looks good on the screen. The music is almost as good.
As for director Prashanth Varma, his thought process was good but his execution is subpar in the first half. In Fear, his script was classy and engaging, but unfortunately, things don't work that well for him in this film as he creates a mess in the first half and only realizes things in the second half. But he ends the film on an interesting note, opening the twists well.
Overall, Kalki is an investigative thriller that clicks in the second half. There is nothing special or exciting about this movie, as the twists are revealed interestingly only in the last twenty minutes. But you have to sit through the lackluster first half to witness that. if you manage to do this, the movie ends as a normal watch.
